What is Green Tripe?

Tripe is the nutritionally dense, edible lining of a ruminant animal such as a cow, goat, or sheep. The green in ‘Green Tripe’ doesn’t actually refer to the color of the meat but it refers to the fact that green tripe is raw, unprocessed and has not been cleaned, chemically washed, bleached, or scaled for human consumption. This means that raw Green Tripe can contain the predigested plant matter which is usually green in color.

Raw Green Tripe contains high amounts of natural digestive enzymes, probiotics, gastric juices, and amino acids, which is what makes green tripe so incredibly beneficial and healthy for our pets.

As cows have four stomachs, this means they produce four different types of tripe which vary in appearance, each of them is just as nutritious as the other, and a variety of all of them is included in the Paleo Ridge meals.

Important note: We are not talking about the tripe that is available in supermarkets, which usually has a white color. The tripe that you can buy in a supermarket is usually chemically bleached or otherwise processed for human consumption and because of this, it has all of the incredible benefits removed. We don’t ever recommend feeding supermarket tripe.

Is Green Tripe Good for Cats and Dogs?

Green Tripe is incredibly healthy for cats and dogs. Green Tripe is jam-packed with nutrients and contains a great source of digestive enzymes, probiotics, minerals, amino acids, and essential fatty acids. Tripe is actually more nutrient-dense than muscle meat. Due to the low level of phosphorus in tripe, it is suitable for dogs with kidney issues.

When you feed your pet Green Tripe, you’ll be providing natural, bioavailable sources of:

- Manganese, iron, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium

- B complex vitamins

- Vitamins A, C, D, and E

- Perfect 1:1 ratio of calcium and phosphorus

- Perfect balance of omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids

- Linoleic and linolenic fatty acids

- Prebiotics and probiotics

- Amino acids

Green Tripe is a nutritional powerhouse that should be included in every dogs and cats diet. Pssst, I've got a tip for you! Most of Paleo Ridge's Meals already contain this incredible superfood Tripe! We've got you covered.

Green Tripe Supports Gut Health and the Immune System

The digestive enzymes found in Green Tripe are especially beneficial for our cats and dogs because our pets do not produce enough of the digestive enzyme, amylase, to break down vegetable matter. Green tripe can also contain the predigested plant matter as well.

But that’s not all, Green Tripe also contains a natural source of probiotics!

This beneficial intestinal bacteria found in Green Tripe can help keep unwanted bacteria such as E-Coli, salmonella, and listeria from overpopulating the gut and prevent them from causing health concerns.

Feeding Green Tripe alongside or in rotation with your Adored Beast pre & probiotics is incredible, because the more diverse the beneficial bacteria in your pet’s gut flora is, the better their immune system will be. So in other words, by feeding Green Tripe you are further diversifying the gut flora and providing new strains of probiotics to your pet.

Probiotics play a vital role in strengthening and supporting the immune system. After all, over 80% of the immune system lies in the gut, and gut issues are related to almost all common health issues we see in our pets today.

This combination of digestive enzymes, probiotics, and nutrients will supercharge any pet’s meal - no matter if dry fed, raw fed, or on a cooked food diet.

The Funky Truth aKA why does tripe smell?

Let’s get straight to it! Green Tripe does not smell good! Dogs love it, and humans got used to it! But don’t be alarmed, the dominant smell is actually normal.

Why does Green Tripe smell so bad? Because it is the lining of a ruminant animal’s stomach where digestive fermentation takes place and where food is broken down.

The smell of Green Tripe can lead many pet parents to believe that tripe is meat that has gone bad. But as mentioned, a strong smell is normal.

It’s also important to know that tripe varies in appearance as well as the smell and can range from very little odor to absolutely stinky.

Sometimes we get messages from alarmed pet parents that say their last batch of Green Tripe did not smell strong, but the new batch of tripe has a very strong smell, and they ask if something is wrong. A variation in odor is also completely normal.

We recommend only feeding Green Tripe which is packaged by pet food manufacturers that follow strict health, food safety, and manufacturing practices. This will provide more assurance that you are feeding safe food. Feeding Green Tripe from a reputable and licensed pet food manufacturer ensures that all products are tested and checked before leaving their facility so that the chance of bad tripe leaving the facility is nearly impossible.

Paleo Ridge is the most accredited raw dog food manufacturer in the UK and the UAE, and all their products are checked and tested before they leave the premises so you can be sure you’re feeding the absolute best quality Green Tripe products.

Take a look at the photo below. This photo shows how different tripe can look in color, even when from the same animal. The three pieces of tripe below are from a fresh delivery of lamb tripe that Paleo Ridge received. All three pieces are from the same batch, all perfectly safe and packed with nutrients and different in color (and smell).

Will my dog and cat like Green Tripe?

Most dogs and cats absolutely LOVE Green Tripe. In fact, we’ve had many pet parents tell us that their pets have become less picky and are finally eating and finishing every single meal since they started feeding Paleo Ridge. We know that this is likely due to the fact that most of the Paleo Ridge Classic meals include either Green Lamb Tripe, or Green Beef Tripe.

The smell of tripe is highly palatable for dogs and cats and especially picky pets have been known to prefer tripe.

Here’s a pro tip: Introduce your picky dog or cat to a raw diet by adding Green Tripe or our Paleo Ridge Classic recipes containing Tripe! They will be less likely to reject new foods if you’re adding Green Tripe.

Where can I buy Green Tripe?

Now before you go running to the supermarket or butcher for tripe, there’s one thing you should know. Tripe from the supermarket or butcher will very likely be white or bleached. This is tripe for human consumption, this is not what we are wanting to feed our cats and dogs. Bleached tripe will be void of all of the beneficial reasons we want to feed tripe.

Green Tripe is commonly available as frozen, raw, grounded, freeze-dried, and canned pet food.

Check with your local online independent pet retailer or local independent pet store, in the freezer section. If possible, you’ll want to make sure the Green Tripe comes from animals that are grass-fed and NOT fed with GMO corn. Meat quality and animal welfare is SO important when it comes to the health of your pet!

If you’re located in the UAE, check out our grass-fed and outdoor reared Green Lamb Tripe and Green Beef Tripe, or buy our Paleo Ridge Classic Range which contain a variety of Tripe. We offer convenient next-working day deliveries across all Emirates.

Paleo Ridge Green Tripe

Green Tripe from the highest welfare and ethically reared meats in the UK! Paleo Ridge does not support intensive factory farming, because animal welfare is the highest priority when it comes to ingredient sourcing.

The beef and lamb are grass-fed, free-range, and outdoor reared!

Paleo Ridge meals are 100% free of synthetic vitamins & minerals, chemicals, flavorings, grains, fillers and more!

This means Paleo Ridge raw pet food is not only free of chemical pollutants but naturally more nutrient dense compared to other raw foods.

ConCLUSION

Green Tripe should be part of any dog’s and cat’s diet, especially when you want to support the immune system or entice your pet’s appetite.

It is highly nutritious and contains an amazing source of vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, pre & probiotics, and a perfect 1:1 ratio of calcium to phosphorus, and omega-6 to omega 3.

Green Tripe can help improve gut health, the immune system, can help prevent and reduce diarrhea, can help improve the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and can help prevent and reduce allergy-like symptoms.

While it doesn’t smell so great for humans, you can be sure you’re feeding an incredibly healthy, highly palatable, and delicious ingredient to your cats and dogs.
